A new search engine called Cuil - claiming to have a larger search index than Google - was launched today.
Founded by Stanford professor Tom Costello and former Google search architect Anna Patterson, the search engine was launched amid much fanfare.
Cuil’s search index is reportedly 120 billion web pages, claiming to be larger than Google’s, which of course they deny.
However successful searching is not just about the size and scope of the index. Relevancy is the key component for a successful search engine, and performing some like-for-like test between Cuil and Google the results can be quite different - which I think is a good thing.
So Cuil is definitely worth having a look at, and along with Yahoo, Live.com and Ask.com will be one of my alternative search engines to Google in the future.
One final thing though - they do seem to be experiencing server problems, probably due to the enormous amount of traffic they’ll be receiving on the day of their release.
